Texas sticks with electronic voting

As other states shift away from voting machines and return to paper ballots, Texas will stick with the technology, mainly because of the investment in the voting machines — $93 million.

Drug paraphernalia sold in Williamson County stores, officials say

In a months-long investigation, Williamson County investigators entered 120 convenience stores and asked for the ”brown bag special” — a brown paper bag filled with a glass tube, steel wool and a lighter, the accroutements needed to smoke crack, methamphetamine or other drugs. It sold for $5.

On Thursday, police rounded up 20 suspects, employees at 17 of the stores, on charges of distribution of drug paraphanalia.

Officials say the drug paraphanalia was sold to adults and children.

Former Cameron County D.A. indicted

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) — Yolanda de Leon, a former Cameron County District Attorney, has been indicted on charges of tampering with governmental records and perjury.

A Cameron County grand jury on Monday issued two indictments against her. The first indictment charged her with 10 counts of tampering with governmental records and the second indictment charged her with two counts of perjury. Read more »

Craddick faulted for not stopping ‘ghost voting’

A Travis County grand jury has rebuked Texas House Speaker Tom Craddick for not enforcing rules designed to ensure that House members are actually casting their own votes in the Legislature.

Houston judge arrested again

HOUSTON (AP) — A Houston municipal court judge, who has filed a lawsuit against the Harris County Sheriff’s Office in connection to her arrest in January, was arrested again Wednesday by sheriff’s deputies.

Deputies said they charged April Jill Walker with evading arrest in a motor vehicle, a felony, because she drove away from the scene of an investigation at high speed and did not stop when a following officer flashed his lights. Read more »

Former sheriff enters perjury plea

VICTORIA, Texas (AP) — Former Victoria County Sheriff Michael L. Ratcliff pleaded guilty Thursday to aggravated perjury, admitting he lied to a grand jury about having sex with a man who accused him of sexual assault. Read more »

Fewer traffic fatalities reported in Texas

July 4, 2008

AUSTIN (AP) — Traffic deaths in Texas dropped in 2007 for the fifth consecutive year, despite an increase in the number of cars and drivers on state roadways, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

The 3,422 traffic deaths in 2007 reflect a 2.7 percent decrease from the previous year. More than 20 million cars are registered in the state, up from 14.2 million in 2000. Read more »

Record high gas prices greet travelers

HOUSTON (AP) — Record high gasoline prices are greeting Fourth of July travelers on Texas highways.

AAA Texas on Friday reported the statewide average for self-serve regular was $3.96 per gallon, up three cents compared to last week. Read more »

Freed hostages, families reunite in Texas

FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas — Back on U.S. soil, three American hostages rescued from leftist guerrillas in Colombia now begin the process of reintegrating into a society they’ve been absent from for more than five years.

They took the first steps Wednesday and Thursday as they underwent medical evaluations and began reuniting with family members. Read more »
